Cold Sores 101

Cold sores are usually caused by reactivation of latent herpes simplex virus Type I (HSV-1) which can be triggered by stress, low resistance due to illness, exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun, menstruation, fatigue, as well as trauma or injuries to the mouth. Cold sores are not associated with seasonal variations in weather, and occur year round. The American Social Health Association estimates that between 50 - 80 percent of the American adult population carries the HSV-1 virus, equivalent to 165 million Americans on average. The Canadian equivalent is approximately 13 - 20 million people. On average, approximately 50 percent of HSV-1 sufferers will experience four to five outbreaks annually.

The virus is considered a living entity. All strains of the Herpesviridae viral family hide in the nerves and the body, hidden from the body’s natural defenses, which cannot get rid of it. Hence, anyone who has ever had a cold sore in their life already harbours the virus. The virus in question is specific for the trigeminal nerve which is responsible for sensations on the face. Once the individual has contracted it just once, the virus strain resides in the trigeminal nerve permanently. Contrary to any other claim, there is no cure only treatment. Even if they come into contact with a more virulent strain, a “new” strain cannot and will not “replace” the old strain as the trigeminal nerve is already occupied.
